0. Investigation: Players’ acceptance of video game bots in Battle royale games

Hi, I am doing an interview survey about

“video game players’ acceptance of in-game bots”.

(“in-game bots” means a character controlled by the computer (instead of the player) that potentially impact the gameplay. AI serves to improve the game-player experience)

It will only take a few minutes of your time. /May I take up you a few minutes?/Could I take up your few minutes?/This survey consumes minutes of your time.

Let me introduce myself. I am a in-game bot engineer. I am applying for my master’s degree.

This is my game design thesis.

If you answer my questionnaire,

you will become

a co-contributor to my treatise

or even have the opportunity

to become a co-creator of my new video game.

0. Do you play Battle Royale genre Games?

(a last-man-standing competition in a shrinking play zone, survival and scavenging.

Dozens of players start with minimal equipment and then they must eliminate all other opponents while avoiding being trapped outside of a shrinking “safe area”, with the winner being the last player or team alive.

such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite Battle Royale, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone…)

Or have you come into contact with Battle Royale gameplays in other games? (such as Multiplayer online battle arena, First-Person Shooter, Action role-playing game…

So… feel free to let me know your true feeling.

1.- What kinds of games do you usually play?

- Among those battle royale games (such as PUBG),

which have you ever played?

What is your purpose of playing this game?

Do you practice…you want improve your in-game controls and skills? Do you usually play with friends? just for fun?or social connection? Why?

2. (In games that you mainly play,)

can you recognize the presence/existence of bots?

ranked modes / normal matching modes?

ranked matching is “the system matches players according to the player’s different Rank”. in ranked sessions, system match players of roughly equal ability together;

unranked mode do not require so much on the level of players, sometimes the system matches high-end master with low-level rookie. in unranked sessions, players’ performance won’t be recorded and analysed.

If you win ranked sessions, you will add a star to your Rank; but if you win in unranked matching mode, it can’t improve your Rank.

1.You can recognize the bots

3- do you think that bots are necessary in games?

Are they acceptable?

-In your opinion,

how do they work in games?

Are their effects more positive or negative?

4-Shorten your matching time:

If players are not enough for game matching,

bots are added automatically

in order to shorten the time for matching,

can you accept that? Why?

1.1 You can recognize and accept bots.

- Why can you accept the presence of bots?

What kinds of bots are acceptable or suitable in your opinion?

-in PVP(Player Versus Player) mode of specific games,

are there any bots that you think are well designed?

Why?

Which part(s) do you think are well designed?

-And are there any parts that can be further improved?

Kindness to beginners: there are full bots in the first session after tutorial part, Can you accept that?

How about in the first several games, can you accept that? Why?

Rounds/sessions: In your opinion, how many sessions are suitable to have bots?

Can you accept the situation that all the sessions have bots?

Do you think that there should be any difference in bot setting between matching and ranking mode?

Is there any difference you want to see in bots of single-player and team-matching mode?

Phases: Which phases of a game are acceptable to have bots?

For example:

1) After landing, you just start looting;

2) A period of time after the beginning of the game, and you get certain equipments;

3) During the process of getting into the circle;

4) When it comes to final rounds, such as there are only 5 people or 4 teams left.

Location: Where is the ideal location for bots to show up on the map? why?

For example: 1) on the open area, like ground; 2) entrances of buildings; 3) inside buildings; 4) near airdrop points.

Proportion: What percentage of bots do you expect to have in each game?

as your opponents, how many real people and bots are suitable to have in each game?

According to your own experience so far,

are those in-game bots easy to recognize?

If yes, what are the main factors you often use to identify them?

Identifiability: What’s your opinion on those easily identifiable bots?

Equipment: How do you feel about the quality of equipment that bots often carry in games?

If improvements are needed, what kind(s) of equipment do you think that bots should carry?

Visibility: In the future, what kind(s) of designs can be made to make bots less visible?

The difficulty in defeating bots:

how do you feel about the difficulty in defeating bots in games?

What is your expectation in terms of the difficulty when fighting with or killing bots?

Suggestions: Do you have other suggestions on the design of in-game bots?

1.2 You can recognize bots but can’t accept them.

-Why do you think that bots are unacceptable in games?

-Are bots unacceptable in all game genres, or in specific genres?

If it comes to specific genres, what are they?

In Battle royale games, are bots unacceptable in all gameplay modes?

If yes, why?

If no, are bots acceptable in normal matching mode or ranked mode?

Kindness to beginners: there are full bots in the first game after tutorial part, Can you accept that?

losing or winning the first game will affect your willingness to continue playing the game? Why?

How would you feel about having bots in the first few games, not just the first one? Is that acceptable? Why?

How many games do you expect to have bots? How many bots do you expect to have in each game (a certain percentage)?

-From your viewpoint, are there any bots that are bad designed in specific games? Which aspects of them do you think are not so good?

  • What impact(s) do they have on your game experience? What kind of adjustment can be done to improve your experience?

2. You can’t recognize bots

3. after tutorial,

there are many bots in the first game,

which can make you start the game more easily

and increase your possibility to win…

Can you accept that?

- If yes, what is the reason?

- If no,

why do you think bots are unacceptable in games?

Do you think that bots are unacceptable both in single-player

or multiple-player modes?

do you think that bots are unacceptable both in ranked modes

or normal matching modes?

4- Shorten your matching time.

If players are not enough for game matching,

bots are added automatically

in order to shorten the time for matching,

can you accept that? Why?

(matchmaking is the process of connecting players together for online play sessions)

- After improvement of your skills in game,

the possibility of bot presence is gradually declined,

and the matching time becomes longer?

Can you accept this?

How do you feel about the situation?

5- Reduce the difficulty of the game.

After you lose in several continuous games,

the system automatically matches you

with some bots in next game.

How do you feel about the situation?

Can you accept this? Why?

How can this affect you in the following game experience?

2.1You can’t recognize bots but can accept them.

Kindness to beginners: How do you feel about setting bots in the first several games? Can you accept them? Why? How many games do you expect to have bots?

Proportion: How many bots do you expect to have in each game (a certain percentage)?

Location: Where is the ideal location for bots to show up on the map, and why? For example: 1) on the open lawns/grassland; 2) near the entrances of buildings; 3) near important resource points like airdrop points.

Phases: Which phases of a game are acceptable to have bots? For example: 1) After landing, you just begin to search for supplies; 2) A period of time after the beginning of the game, and you have had certain equipment; 3) During the process of escaping from the poisonous circle; 4) When it comes to finals, such as there are only 5 people or 4 teams left.

Suggestions: Do you have other suggestions on the design of in-game bots?
